Mama's Orphans

In Kenya, a woman with children is known by the combination of the title "Mama" with the name of her eldest child. So "Mama Orphans" is the name given to the Rev. Monica Oduor, our mission partner in Busia, Kenya, who operates Mama Orphans Children's Home, for children whose parents have died of AIDS and whose extended families are unable to support them.

In the fall of 2006 Crossroads' Betty and George made their first visit to Mama and the children, and another member, Leslie, followed with a visit in the winter of 2008. This past winter, Betty and George returned to visit Mama and the children again, over Christmas 2009. Each time a Crossroads member visits Mama and the children, more stories come home to Crossroads about both the challenges and the incredible blessings of life at the orphanage.

The 2009 Vacation Bible School also supported Mama as its Outreach project, and this past fall, the Sunday School children in the grade 4-6 group planned and carried out a bottle drive and soup and sandwich lunch on November 22 in support of Mama. They raised about $500 in that most recent effort for Mama and the children, and were delighted to hear from Betty and George upon their return that they had paid for the Christmas dinner feast at the orphanage..

We have been hoping for a visit from Mama, who is very keen to speak to groups here in Canada about the realities of her life and the ministry she is doing with the children. She is, of course, also keen to make connections with international churches and groups who are in a position to support her ministry financially. For various reasons, her visit has not yet become a reality, but we are hopeful that we will one day be able to offer our hospitality to Mama here in Delta.

In the meantime, we continue to support Mama and the 80 - 100 children who live in her care with our prayers and our financial gifts. More information about the Canadian foundation (a registered Canadian charity) through which we support Mama can be found at the following link:
