Lenten Study
During the Lenten season in 2012, we will be exploring the statements of faith of the United Church of Canada, from the Basis of Union, written in 1902, the Statement of Faith of 1940, the "A New Creed" of 1967, to the Song of Faith, adopted by the General Council in 2006. Our reflection on these faith statements, across the time of the United Church's life, with their particular language and assumptions about the world, will help us to prepare to participate in a uniquely United Church activity: a "Remit."
When changes are proposed to the theological portions of the Manual of the United Church of Canada, the entire church must participate in the decision. Thus, in the spring of 2012, our Policy Board must vote on a Remit asking the question about whether the subsequent statements of faith after the Basis of Union may be added to the Manual. The Lenten study will be an opportunity for congregation members to participate in the conversation, in order for the Policy Board to discern the "mind of the congregation" before voting on the remit at their April meeting.
Adults of all generations will be welcome at this study which will be offered on Tuesday evenings 7-9 pm February 28 and March 13, 20 and 27, or Wednesday mornings 10-12 February 29 and March 14, 21, and 28. Interested potential participants are asked to sign up at the church office, indicating their availability and preference for either of these times.
